Gold-filled metal has a thicker gold-plating than traditional gold plate items and uses 14ct gold but has a base of copper & brass.
Gold Vermeil pieces consist of a layer of 18ct gold electroplated onto a sterling silver base. Gold Vermeil pieces are made purely from precious metals, unlike gold-plated items, and have a much thicker coating of 18ct gold. Gold Vermeil pieces must have at least a 2.5-micron layer whereas gold-plating only requires a minimum of 0.5 microns. This means the piece contains 5x the gold. 18ct gold is an alloy which contains 75% pure gold and this is the highest percentage of gold that jewellery should be made of due to the soft nature of solid gold.
